The Car Key is Broken
It is a common occurrence for us to get a phone call from someone who has dropped their keys only to have their car key break into several pieces. When the key breaks, they are surprised by what is inside the covering around the top of the key.
Since the mid to late 1990s, automobile manufacturers have designed transponder keys and vehicle anti-theft system (VAT) keys in an effort to deter, and even prevent, vehicle theft. As a result, keys now consist of more than just metal and plastic around the top of the key. They have computer chips, resistor chips and batteries for remote keyless entry enclosed in the case around the top of the key.
What Are Transponder Keys and VAT Keys?
For the most part, today, automobile keys come in two forms – transponder keys and VAT keys. These types of keys entail much more work and science to create.
VAT Keys: VAT keys are simply a security system built in a car that reads a resistor value from an automobile key and compares it to the value in the computer of the car. If they match, the ignition starts but if not, the car does not start and can be thrown into a locked non-start mode for several minutes.
Transponder Keys: Transponder keys are keys that contain a transponder chip which allows communication between the ignition and the key allowing the car to start. These keys are specially programmed so that when the key and the ignition “talk,” they must convey the same message. If not, the car does not start.
In the past, it was necessary for owners to get replacement keys exclusively from automobile dealers who ordered new keys from the manufacturer at a very expensive cost.
